Profiles in Improvement 2023 saw widespread improvements across government in employee engagement and satisfaction. We found that a top factor influencing engagement and satisfaction was employees having a strong connection to their agency’s mission. Recognition and work-life balance also influence employee engagement and satisfaction but showed a larger influence on other important aspects of the employee experience such as an employee’s decision to continue working in government and their perceptions of leadership. We talked to a subset of agencies that improved their scores or ranking in these categories in order to identify best practices, new ideas and strategies for success. Although these agencies represent a small fraction of those that improved, others can apply these successes to create a better employee experience. Mission Match The Mission Match category measures whether employees identify with the mission of their organization, believe their work is important and appreciated and feel a sense of accomplishment from performing their job.
